Contents of the short courses

METHODS IN BIOMIMETICS

The course covers biomimetic materials, structures, mechanisms and systems. Examples at all levels will be discussed and illustrated, together with techniques for analysis and discovery. There will be three lectures, each about 90 minutes, with ample time for discussion and questions. Suitable for students and staff at all levels with interests in biology, engineering, design and architecture.

STRUCTURAL BIOLOGICAL MATERIALS

The course covers a range of biological materials ranging from soft to stiff, including some novel techniques for mechanical testing, especially of small and complex samples.  There will be three lectures, each about 90 minutes, with ample time for discussion and questions. Suitable for students and staff at all levels at all levels with interests in biology, engineering, design and food science.

PRESENTER: Prof. Julian F. V. Vincent

Julian F. V. Vincent is the President of the ISBE. His primary training was in zoology, but he has also been a Professor of Mechanical Engineering. He has published over 320 papers, articles and books covering aspects of mechanical design of plants and animals, complex fracture mechanics, design of composite materials, use of natural materials in technology, advanced textiles, deployable structures in architecture and robotics, smart systems and structures. His book Structural Biomaterials is a standard text.
