The Department of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Akron invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position with an emphasis on robotics and biomimicry (the imitation of systems and/or elements of nature for the purpose of solving complex human problems) at the Assistant/Associate Professor level beginning in August 2019.

Applicants are expected to contribute to the core teaching, mentoring, and research missions of both mechanical engineering and biomimicry. The successful applicant will be expected to develop an independent, externally-funded research program and teach classes in mechanical engineering and the biomimicry program at the graduate and undergraduate level. He/she would  be expected to develop new specialized courses, work collaboratively with diverse populations, supervise graduate research and contribute to departmental, college and university services.

Applicants should preferably have a doctorate degree in mechanical engineering (or another relevant discipline) with expertise in at least one (preferably more than one) of the following areas: robotics (including rigid and soft robotics), control systems, and/or biomimicry. Rank will be commensurate with the candidate's experience. Prior experience and a commitment to continue working with or teaching diverse groups and diverse students will be valued.

The College of Engineering is one of the largest colleges at the university with approximately 3,000 undergraduates and nearly 400 graduate students pursuing B.S. through Ph.D. degrees. Mechanical engineering accounts for roughly half of the students in the college of engineering.
